- An electricity bill is estimated from energy used in kilowatt-hours (kWh), multiplied by your unit rate, plus fixed charges such as a daily standing/service fee and other fees or taxes. This calculator supports entering kWh directly or computing kWh from previous and current meter readings.

- Meter mode requires current ≥ previous on the same kWh register; otherwise METER_READING_DECREASED.
- Arithmetic is IEEE-754 binary64; only the displayed final amount is rounded to 2 decimal places.

How an electricity bill is calculated
A typical bill estimate has three parts:
- Energy use in kWh (units on your meter)
- Usage cost = kWh × unit rate ($/kWh)
- Fixed charges = standing charge × days + other lump-sum charges
Bill ≈ (kWh × rate) + (standing/day × days) + fees
This calculator estimates that total. It does not automatically apply country-specific slab tariffs, TOU peak rates, percentage taxes, or solar export rebates — enter an effective average rate, or a lump-sum already calculated on your statement.

Why estimates differ from the real bill
- Slab / tiered rates — higher units cost more per kWh in many regions
- Time-of-use — peak vs off-peak prices
- Taxes & duties — VAT, electricity duty, fuel adjustment
- Demand / MD charges — common on commercial tariffs
- Solar / net metering — export credits not included automatically
- Estimated vs actual reads — supplier estimates can diverge from your meter
For slab-heavy tariffs, compute energy charges per slab manually (or with a local board tool), then enter the energy subtotal as “other fees” plus a 0 rate — or use an average effective/kWh.

How is an electricity bill calculated?
Find energy used in kWh, multiply by the unit rate, then add standing/service charges and any taxes or fixed fees. Bill ≈ kWh × rate + standing × days + other fees.
What is a kilowatt-hour (kWh)?
One kWh (often called one “unit”) is the energy used by a 1000 W load running for one hour. Meters usually count kWh.
What information do I need?
Either total kWh or meter readings (previous and current), your price per kWh, billing period in days, and any daily standing charge or other fees from your bill.
What is a standing charge?
A fixed daily fee for keeping your supply connected, charged even if you use little or no electricity. Enter it as $/day (or convert pence/cents to dollars).
How do I get kWh from appliances?
kWh = (watts × hours per day × days) ÷ 1000. Sum appliances for a household estimate, or use the Energy Cost calculator for one device at a time.
Why doesn’t this match my real bill?
Utilities may use slab/tier rates, peak/off-peak TOU prices, fuel adjustments, VAT/duty, demand charges, subsidies, or solar export credits. This tool uses a flat unit rate plus fixed charges.
Can I use this with solar panels?
Yes for a rough estimate of grid import: use the kWh imported from the grid (or meter import reading). Export credits and net metering are not modeled automatically.
How can I lower my bill?
Cut hours on high-watt loads, switch to LEDs, raise AC setpoint a little, unplug standby devices, choose efficient appliances, and compare tariffs when you can switch supplier.
