Formulas

Core equations used by this calculator.

Add VAT (gross)Gross = Net × (1 + rate/100)
VAT amount (from net)VAT = Net × rate/100
Remove VAT (net)Net = Gross × 100 / (100 + rate)
VAT amount (from gross)VAT = Gross − Net
iRate is a percent (enter 20 for 20%). Same arithmetic applies to many GST systems. Zero-rated goods use 0%. Always confirm the legal rate for your country and product category.

How to use

1

Choose Add VAT or Remove VAT

Add when you know the ex-VAT price; remove when the price already includes VAT.

2

Enter amount and rate

Use a preset (0%, 5%, 20%, …) or type any percent.

3

Read net, VAT, and gross

All three values appear in the result.

Definition
Value-added tax (VAT) is a consumption tax charged as a percentage of the net price. To add VAT: Gross = Net × (1 + rate/100) and VAT = Net × rate/100. To remove VAT from a tax-inclusive price: Net = Gross × 100 / (100 + rate) and VAT = Gross − Net. This calculator supports any rate (default 20%).
What it calculates
Net, VAT amount, and gross when adding or removing a percentage VAT rate.
Inputs
  • Amount (net when adding; gross when removing)
  • VAT rate in percent
Outputs
  • Net (ex VAT)
  • VAT amount
  • Gross (inc VAT)
Formula
Gross=Net·(1+r/100); Net=Gross·100/(100+r)
Assumptions
  • Single flat rate on the entered amount
  • No multi-rate baskets or input-tax credits modeled
Units
  • Currency units consistent for all money fields
  • Rate as percent
Boundary conditions
  • Rate 0 → net = gross, VAT = 0
  • Negative inputs clamped to 0
Example
Net 100 at 20% → VAT 20, gross 120

Background

Interpretation and common distinctions.

Add or remove VAT (value-added tax) from a price. Default rate 20%.

Add VAT example: Net 100 → VAT 20 → Gross 120.

Common rates (illustrative)

Rate Typical use
20% Standard rate in many jurisdictions (e.g. UK standard)
5% Reduced rate on selected goods/services
0% Zero-rated supplies (VAT amount is 0)
15–27% Common standard-rate band in many EU countries

Always verify the correct legal rate for your product and country.

Frequently asked questions

Key distinctions behind the calculation.

How do I add VAT to a net price?

Multiply by (1 + rate/100). At 20%: Gross = Net × 1.2. VAT = Net × 0.2. Example: 100 → VAT 20, gross 120.

How do I remove VAT from a gross price?

Divide by (1 + rate/100), or Net = Gross × 100 / (100 + rate). At 20%: Net = Gross ÷ 1.2. Example: 120 → net 100, VAT 20.

What is the difference between net and gross?

Net (ex VAT) is the price before tax. Gross (inc VAT) is what the customer pays. VAT is the difference: Gross − Net.

What VAT rate should I use?

It depends on your country and the goods or services. Many jurisdictions use a standard rate (often around 15–27%), plus reduced and zero rates for specific categories. Confirm with official guidance.

Is VAT the same as GST or sales tax?

VAT and GST are both multi-stage consumption taxes; names differ by country. Retail sales tax is usually collected only at the final sale. The add/remove percent math is similar when you apply a single rate to a price.

What about 0% or exempt supplies?

At 0%, net equals gross and VAT is 0. Exempt rules are legal categories — this tool only does the percentage arithmetic you enter.

Can I use any currency?

Yes. Enter amounts in any unit; the calculator is currency-agnostic.
